OUR STORY

Welcome to Sushi Akira, an intimate 12-seat omakase experience on the Upper East Side. Helmed by Chef Nikki, Sushi Akira brings Michelin-level precision, artistry, and service at a relatively approachable price — making exceptional omakase accessible to anyone keen on the experience.

Chef-Owner Nikki honed her craft at some of New York City’s most revered sushi destinations, including Masa, Sushi Nakazawa, and Sushi of Gari.

Her journey began humbly. As a part-time dishwasher in Tokyo’s Michelin-starred French restaurant, Quintessence Tokyo, Chef Nikki grew curious and passionate for culinary. Her time there showed her that food could bring constant joy, and change perceptions when treated with the right technique and attitude. She soon gave up the major she was pursuing in Tokyo and moved to New York City to further explore her gastronomy talents.

Despite the challenges of being one of the few female sushi chefs in the industry, Nikki’s meticulous technique, exceptional palate, and dedication to her guests transcended gender and culture barriers. She earned her reputation from both peers and patrons.

OUR TEAM

Alongside Nikki is Chef Jeff, a Hong Kong native with over 10 years of culinary expertise. Specializing in Kaiseki-style dishes, Jeff brings creative seasonal small plates that harmoniously complement Nikki’s expertly crafted nigiri.

Joyce, a second-generation restaurateur, brings a deep understanding of hospitality and an unwavering commitment to quality. For Joyce, opening Sushi Akira on the Upper East Side was a deliberate choice—filling a gap in the neighborhood’s upscale dining scene with a restaurant that reflects the area’s refined tastes and cultural sensibilities.
